How reports print it
What it shows
A vitamin needed for making blood and for the nervous system.
Units and conversion
Base unit: pg/mL.
- 1 pmol/L = 1.355 pg/mL · 1 pg/mL = 0.7378 pmol/L
Typical ranges
Your laboratory’s range comes first — it is printed on the report next to the result. Below is one laboratory’s adult range with its method: a reference, not a rule.
| Who | Range, pg/mL |
|---|---|
| Adults | 197–771 |
Range source: Лаборатория Хеликс — Витамин B12 (цианокобаламин)
Good to know
The British Society for Haematology (2014) writes that there are no clear cut-offs and local ranges are needed. Invitro returns «<148» or «>6000» pg/mL when a value is outside its method’s measuring range. Conversion: pmol/L × 1.355 ≈ pg/mL.
Why it can be higher
Common reasons discussed with a doctor. This is not a diagnosis.
- Taking vitamins and supplements with B12
- Liver conditions
- Some blood conditions
Why it can be lower
- A diet without animal foods
- Poor absorption: atrophic gastritis, stomach surgery
- Some medicines, such as metformin and acid-reducing drugs
- Age
What to ask a doctor
- Are extra tests needed if the result is borderline?
- How does B12 fit with MCV?
Whom to see
A GP or internist.
