Pillars of health

Prevention

Almost half of people with high blood pressure do not know it: by WHO estimates, that is 600 million adults — 44% of the 1.4 billion people aged 30–79 with hypertension.

What science says

  1. The only way to detect high blood pressure is to have a health professional measure it. You can also measure it at home with an automated monitor, but assessing risk and related conditions takes a health professional.

  2. About 38% of cancers can be prevented today — by avoiding risk factors and using proven prevention. Cancer deaths are lower when it is found early and treatment starts on time.

  3. Screening looks for signs of cancer or pre-cancer before symptoms appear. That is the point of a check-up — to go while nothing bothers you.

  4. Over the past 50 years vaccines have saved about 154 million lives — 6 lives every minute.

  5. In Russia the free preventive check-up under compulsory insurance (OMS) is yearly; the extended check-up (dispanserizatsiya) is once every three years from 18 to 39 and every year from 40.

Yearly minimum

  • In Russia: the OMS preventive check-up once a year; the extended check-up every three years from 18 to 39 inclusive, every year from 40.[4] Source
  • Know your blood pressure: measure it at the doctor’s or at home and write down the numbers with the date.[1] Source
  • Ask your GP which vaccines and screenings are worth updating.Practice

How to start

Three small steps for this week.

  1. Open the «Free check-ups» section and see which check-ups are due this year.
  2. Measure your blood pressure and write down the numbers with the date — for a talk with a doctor.
  3. Put your lab results from recent years into the «Lab results» section: you can see the trend, and everything stays on your device.
